Gedaliah was appointed governor of Judah by the Babylonians after Jerusalem's destruction, tasked with governing the peasants left behind, and he urged the remaining population to settle down and submit peacefully to Babylonian rule. A royal descendant named Ishmael assassinated him within months, and fearing Babylonian reprisal for the governor's murder, the remaining population fled to Egypt against Jeremiah's direct warning not to go.
