The same name traced across the biblical canon and the Second Temple texts, side by side.
Gennesaret
The fertile plain on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, and by extension the lake itself, which the Old Testament calls Chinnereth. Josephus said almost every kind of tree and crop grew there most of the year. In 1986 a first-century fishing boat came out of the mud near Kibbutz Ginosar on that shore.

Gennesaret refers both to a fertile plain on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee and, by extension, to the lake itself, also called the Sea of Galilee or Chinnereth in the Old Testament (Matthew 14:34; Mark 6:53; Luke 5:1). The first-century historian Josephus praised the plain's exceptional fertility, describing it as supporting nearly every kind of tree and crop through most of the year. A first-century fishing boat recovered from the mud near Kibbutz Ginosar on the lakeshore in 1986 has illustrated the fishing economy the Gospels describe in this same area.
