Gibeonites were the inhabitants of Gibeon, a Hivite city that secured a peace treaty with Israel in Joshua 9 by disguising themselves as travelers from a distant land. Centuries later Saul violated that treaty by killing some Gibeonites, and the resulting famine under David was only resolved by handing over seven of Saul's descendants for execution. Excavations at el-Jib, identified with biblical Gibeon, have turned up wine jar handles inscribed with the city's name, confirming the site.
