Gilead was the mountainous region east of the Jordan, bounded by Bashan to the north and Moab and Ammon to the south, split by the Jabbok river into a northern half ruled by Og and a southern half ruled by Sihon before Israel's conquest. It was allotted to Gad, Reuben, and half of Manasseh, and its rugged terrain made it a natural refuge, most famously for Jacob fleeing Laban and later for David fleeing Absalom. Its forests and pastures were known for balm and spices, giving rise to Jeremiah's question, “Is there no balm in Gilead?”
