Golan
One of the three cities of refuge east of the Jordan, in Bashan, where someone who had killed by accident could run from revenge. It went to the Gershonite Levites and later gave its name to the region, which is why there are Golan Heights today. The exact site is not known.

Golan was a city in Bashan, east of the Sea of Galilee, designated one of Israel's three cities of refuge east of the Jordan, where a person who killed someone accidentally could flee for protection from revenge (Deuteronomy 4:43; Joshua 20:8). It was given to the Gershonite Levites and later gave its name to the surrounding region of Gaulanitis, the origin of the modern name Golan Heights. Its precise site has not been conclusively identified.
