Goliath (Giant living at the time of United Monarchy)
The Philistine champion from Gath whom the young David killed in the valley of Elah. The traditional Hebrew text makes him over nine feet, while the Dead Sea Scrolls and the earliest Greek give about six foot nine. One later passage credits Elhanan, and Chronicles makes Elhanan's man Goliath's brother.

Goliath was a Philistine champion from Gath, over nine feet tall by the traditional Hebrew text, though the Dead Sea Scrolls and the earliest Greek translation give a shorter reading of about six foot nine, which is why some modern translations describe him as closer to seven feet. He came from a family of giants that included his brothers Ishbi-benob and Saph, both killed later by David's men. His duel with the young David in the valley of Elah is the single scene that defines him in Scripture, and one later passage even credits a different soldier, Elhanan, with killing him, though Chronicles resolves this by making Elhanan's victim Goliath's brother instead.
