Hamath
An Aramean capital on the Orontes in Upper Syria, the old northern limit of the land promised to Israel. Its king Toi was David's ally. Inscribed stones from the site, set up by a king the Assyrians called Irhuleni, were among the first Hieroglyphic Luwian texts European scholars saw, and reading his name gave them some of the script's first sign values.

Hamath was the capital of an Aramean kingdom on the Orontes River in Upper Syria, marking the traditional northern boundary of the land promised to Israel. Its king Toi allied with David, and centuries later Assyria conquered the city, deported part of its population to Samaria after Israel's fall, and crushed a revolt there under a rebel named Yahu-bihdi. Excavations at the site, modern Hama, uncovered Hittite hieroglyphic inscriptions carved into building stones, evidence that the city had earlier been under Hittite cultural influence; these “Hamath stones” helped nineteenth century scholars begin deciphering Luwian hieroglyphic script.
