Hebron

Hebron is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, sitting in the hill country south of Jerusalem and known earlier as Kirjath-arba. Abraham camped nearby at Mamre and bought the cave of Machpelah there to bury Sarah, and the site remained associated with the patriarchs; Herod's massive stone enclosure over the traditional tomb still stands as one of the best preserved ancient structures in the region. Joshua assigned the city to Caleb, and centuries later David reigned there for seven years before moving his capital to Jerusalem. The same Hebrew name also belongs to a son of Kohath the Levite and to a descendant of Caleb listed in Chronicles.
