Heli (Man living at the time of the New Testament)
Luke 3:23 makes him Joseph's father, where Matthew names Jacob. Readers since antiquity have said Luke is tracing Mary's line, or that a levirate marriage explains it, and the question is still open.

Named in Luke's genealogy of Jesus as the father of Joseph (Luke 3:23), though Matthew's genealogy names Jacob as Joseph's father instead. Since antiquity, readers have proposed that Luke traces Mary's ancestry through Heli while Matthew traces Joseph's, or that the two lists reflect a levirate marriage; the discrepancy is old and remains unresolved. Nothing else concerning Heli is recorded in scripture.
