Gilead's son, of Manasseh, and the father of Zelophehad. Zelophehad had five daughters and no son, and their case before Moses won daughters the right to inherit.
Hepher was a son of Gilead in Manasseh and father of Zelophehad, whose five daughters successfully petitioned Moses for the right to inherit their father's land in the absence of a son, a case that established a lasting principle of inheritance law in Israel. Separately, Hepher was a Canaanite royal city that Joshua conquered; it later gave its name to a district in Solomon's administrative system. The name also belonged to one of Asher's descendants and to one of David's mighty warriors.
