Herodias (Woman living at the time of the New Testament)
Granddaughter of Herod the Great. She left her first husband for his half-brother, Herod Antipas, and when John the Baptist called the marriage unlawful she had her daughter dance at a banquet and ask for his head. Josephus gives a different reason for John's death, a political execution.

Luke names her only as the reason John rebukes Herod and gets imprisoned for it (3:19), the marriage itself. Josephus, independent of any Gospel and with no Christian interest at stake, confirms John's death under Herod Antipas and gives his own reason: not the dinner-party beheading of the later Gospel account, but a preemptive political execution, fear of a popular movement Herod couldn't control.
Herodias was the granddaughter of Herod the Great who left her first husband to marry his half-brother Herod Antipas, a marriage John the Baptist publicly condemned as unlawful. Her resentment of John's criticism led her to orchestrate his execution, having her daughter dance for Antipas at a banquet and then demand John's head on a platter as the reward, a request Antipas granted reluctantly to avoid breaking an oath made in front of his guests.
