Hiel

He rebuilt Jericho in Ahab's reign, and it cost him both ends of his family: Abiram, his firstborn, died when he laid the foundation and Segub, the youngest, when he set up the gates. Joshua had cursed whoever rebuilt the city, and Kings tells it as that word coming true.

First, in plain English

He rebuilt Jericho in Ahab's reign, and it cost him both ends of his family: Abiram, his firstborn, died when he laid the foundation and Segub, the youngest, when he set up the gates. Joshua had cursed whoever rebuilt the city, and Kings tells it as that word coming true.

Who this is

Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho during the reign of Ahab, centuries after Joshua had destroyed the city and pronounced a curse on whoever would rebuild it (Joshua 6:26). The curse was fulfilled literally: 1 Kings 16:34 records that Hiel lost his firstborn son Abiram when he laid the city's foundation and his youngest son Segub when he set up its gates. The episode is presented as proof that the word spoken through Joshua, like the word spoken through Elijah in the surrounding narrative, held true.
