The same name traced across the biblical canon and the Second Temple texts, side by side.

Hittite (Man living at the time of the Patriarchs)

Ephron the Hittite sold Abraham the cave of Machpelah at Hebron, and Uriah, the soldier whose wife David took, was a Hittite too. Critics once doubted there was ever a Hittite nation, until digs at Boghazkoy in Turkey found its capital. The Hittites in Canaan were probably a smaller offshoot, or the name used loosely.

Who this is

Hittites appear in the Old Testament as one of the peoples native to Canaan, most famously at Hebron, where Abraham bought the cave of Machpelah from Ephron the Hittite as a burial site for Sarah, and later as individuals such as Uriah, the Hittite soldier whose wife Bathsheba David took. For a long time critics doubted a Hittite nation ever existed, but nineteenth and twentieth century excavations at Boghazkoy in Turkey uncovered the capital and royal archives of a genuine Hittite Empire, a major Bronze Age power that rivaled Egypt and fought Ramesses II at Kadesh. The biblical Hittites of Canaan were likely a smaller offshoot, or simply a name borrowed loosely from that larger Anatolian people, rather than the imperial Hittites themselves.
