Hivites were one of the Canaanite peoples occupying the land before Israel's arrival, associated in Genesis 34 with the city of Shechem, where Hamor the Hivite's son violated Jacob's daughter Dinah, and in Joshua 9 with Gibeon, whose inhabitants tricked Joshua into a treaty by pretending to come from a distant country. That treaty later brought Gibeon under Israelite protection even though the city was never conquered outright.
