Hormah (Zephath)
Its name means "devoted to destruction", and it was first called Zephath. Israel was beaten there after going into Canaan without the Lord, following the spies' report. Later Israel vowed to destroy the cities of the region, and the vow, kept under Joshua, gave the town its name.

Hormah, meaning "devoted to destruction," was a town in the Negev originally called Zephath. Israel was first routed there by the Amalekites and Canaanites after presuming to invade Canaan without the Lord's presence following the spies' report. Later, after a Canaanite king attacked and took Israelite captives, Israel vowed to destroy the region's cities in retaliation, a vow finally fulfilled under Joshua, giving the site its lasting name.
