Who this is

The Greek and Roman name for Edom, the region south of Judea named for Esau's descendants. By the New Testament era its Idumean population had been forcibly incorporated into Judea under the Hasmonean ruler John Hyrcanus, and it was from this Idumean stock that the family of Herod the Great descended; Mark 3:8 lists Idumea among the regions from which crowds came to Jesus.
