The same name traced across the biblical canon and the Second Temple texts, side by side.

Immanuel (Man living at the time of the New Testament)

"God with us." Isaiah gave the name to King Ahaz as a sign that the danger to Judah would pass before a child called by it was old enough to know right from wrong. Matthew applies it to Jesus' birth, and which child Isaiah first had in view is still argued over.

Who this is

Immanuel, meaning "God with us," is not a historical individual but a prophetic name. Isaiah gave it as a sign to King Ahaz, promising that before a child bearing this name grew old enough to know right from wrong, the threat facing Judah would pass (Isaiah 7:14), and used it again as a rallying cry against Judah's enemies (Isaiah 8:8). Matthew's Gospel applies the name to Jesus' birth as its ultimate fulfillment (Matthew 1:23), while the identity of the child originally in view in Isaiah's own day is still debated among interpreters.
