Irijah was a captain of the guard at Jerusalem's Benjamin Gate who arrested the prophet Jeremiah as he tried to leave the city during a lull in the Babylonian siege, accusing him of deserting to the Chaldeans (Jeremiah 37:13-14). He handed Jeremiah over to the princes, who had him beaten and imprisoned. Jeremiah maintained his innocence, but the episode led to a long and dangerous confinement (Jeremiah 37:15-21).
