Ithra was the father of Amasa, the commander David's son Absalom placed over his rebel army during the revolt against David. He is called an Israelite in 2 Samuel 17:25 but Jether the Ishmaelite in the parallel genealogy of 1 Chronicles 2:17, one of several small textual variants in the record of David's extended family. His wife Abigail was David's sister, making Amasa David's nephew.
