A region northeast of Galilee, around Mount Hermon and the Anti-Lebanon range, ruled together with Trachonitis by the tetrarch Philip in Luke's account of John the Baptist's ministry (Luke 3:1). Its inhabitants, the Itureans, were a semi-nomadic Arab people later absorbed into the Roman client kingdom of Chalcis; Roman-era coinage from the region confirms the local dynasts Luke's Gospel situates alongside Herod's sons.
