Javan (Man living at the time of the Patriarchs)
Japheth's fourth son in the table of nations. The Hebrews took his descendants to be the Ionians, the Greek world, and the prophets use Javan to mean Greece and its merchants. Modern Hebrew still calls Greece by the name.

In the table of nations, Javan is the fourth son of Japheth, whose descendants the Hebrews identified with the Ionians and, more broadly, the Greek world (Genesis 10:2, 4). The prophets use "Javan" as shorthand for Greece and its merchants (Isaiah 66:19; Ezekiel 27:13, 19), and the name survives in modern Hebrew as the word for Greece itself.
