Jehu
Jehu, the name of five Israelites
First, in plain English
Jehu, the name of five Israelites
Who this is
Jehu was a military commander anointed king of Israel by one of Elisha's prophetic students specifically to destroy Ahab's dynasty, and he carried out that mission with notorious thoroughness, killing King Joram, Queen Jezebel, and every remaining descendant of Ahab's house, then tricking Baal's priests into a fake sacrifice so he could slaughter them all at once. An Assyrian relief, the Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III, depicts Jehu bowing before the Assyrian king and paying tribute, the only known image of an Israelite king in ancient art.
