Jerusalem

Jerusalem was Israel's capital under David, who captured it from the Jebusites and made it his political and religious center, and Solomon's temple there made it the focal point of Israelite worship for a thousand years, through destruction by Babylon, rebuilding under the returned exiles, and a final destruction by Rome in AD 70. Jesus's death and resurrection took place just outside its walls, and its name became synonymous throughout Scripture with God's dwelling among his people, extended in Revelation into the vision of a new Jerusalem descending from heaven. It remains one of the most excavated cities in the world, and finds ranging from Hezekiah's tunnel to the Pilate-era Pool of Siloam continue to confirm details from the biblical account.
