Jeshua is a shortened, post-exilic spelling of the name Joshua, “the LORD saves,” and in Ezra-Nehemiah it belongs to several different people as well as to a resettled town. Its most significant bearer is Jeshua son of Jozadak, the high priest who returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel, rebuilt the altar and later the temple, and is called Joshua in the prophecies of Haggai and Zechariah, where he stands beside Zerubbabel as a picture of the coming priest-king. The name also belongs to a priestly family head, several Levites who assisted in reforms and worship under Ezra and Nehemiah, and a town in Judah resettled after the exile.
