Jupiter, known to the Greeks as Zeus, was the chief god of the Greco-Roman pantheon, ruler of the sky and the other gods. At Lystra the crowd, astonished when Paul healed a man lame from birth, hailed Barnabas as Jupiter and Paul as Mercury and the local priest of Jupiter, whose temple stood before the city, brought oxen to sacrifice to them until Paul and Barnabas tore their clothes and stopped the crowd (Acts 14:11-18).
