Kohathites (Levi's son living at the time of Egypt and Wilderness)

One of the three Levitical divisions, descended from Kohath. They carried the holiest furnishings, the ark among them, on poles and not in a cart, and 2 Samuel 6 shows what happened when that rule was broken. They camped south of the tabernacle. Moses, Aaron and Samuel were all Kohathites.

First, in plain English

Who this is

The Kohathites were the descendants of Kohath, one of Levi's three sons, and formed one of the three Levitical divisions responsible for the tabernacle. Their specific charge was the most sacred furnishings, including the ark of the covenant, which they carried on poles rather than in a cart so that no one would touch it directly, a rule broken with fatal results in 2 Samuel 6. In the wilderness camp they pitched south of the tabernacle, and Moses, Aaron, and Samuel all belonged to this line.
