Lachish
A heavily fortified Canaanite royal city in Judah's lowlands. Joshua took it, Rehoboam rebuilt it into one of Judah's strongest fortresses, and in 701 BC Sennacherib's Assyrians took it again. Assyria carved the siege on wall reliefs now in the British Museum. The ruins at Tell ed-Duweir also gave up the Lachish Letters, written during Babylon's last siege, just before Jerusalem fell.

Lachish was a heavily fortified Canaanite royal city in Judah's lowlands, captured and destroyed by Joshua and later rebuilt into one of Judah's strongest fortresses under Rehoboam. Sennacherib's Assyrian army besieged and captured it in 701 BC, an episode Assyria commemorated in a series of relief carvings, now in the British Museum, depicting the siege ramp, battle, and deportation of captives in detail. Excavations at Tell ed-Duweir, the city's ruins, also uncovered the Lachish Letters, a set of Hebrew ostraca written during the final Babylonian siege of Judah shortly before Jerusalem's fall, a rare firsthand military correspondence from the very end of the kingdom.
