The same name traced across the biblical canon and the Second Temple texts, side by side.
Levi (Jacob's son living at the time of the Patriarchs)
Jacob's third son. He and Simeon massacred the men of Shechem after their sister Dinah was raped, and Jacob cursed them both for it on his deathbed. Even so, Levi's descendants became Israel's priestly tribe, given service at the tabernacle instead of land, partly for their zeal against the golden calf at Sinai.

Levi was Jacob's third son, and his violent participation in the massacre at Shechem after his sister Dinah's rape earned Jacob's deathbed condemnation alongside his brother Simeon. Levi's descendants nonetheless became Israel's priestly tribe, set apart for temple and tabernacle service instead of receiving a normal territorial inheritance, a role the Levites earned in part by their zeal in punishing the golden calf idolatry at Sinai. A few minor figures in Jesus's genealogy also carry the name Levi.
