Lot (Man living at the time of the Patriarchs)

Abraham's nephew, who came with him from Ur. When their herdsmen started fighting and they split, Lot took the green Jordan valley and ended up living by Sodom. First, in plain English

Abraham's nephew, who came with him from Ur. When their herdsmen started fighting and they split, Lot took the green Jordan valley and ended up living by Sodom. Angels dragged him out before it burned, and his wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. Afterwards his two daughters got him drunk and had sons by him, the fathers of Moab and Ammon.

Worth knowing

Jesus uses him three times in one breath as a warning, eating, drinking, building, right up until the fire fell (17:28-32), ending in the single starkest line in the passage: 'Remember Lot's wife.' Josephus tells the same land-division story Genesis does, the ordinary choice that put Lot next door to Sodom in the first place.

Who this is

Lot was Abraham's nephew who traveled with him from Ur and eventually settled near Sodom, choosing the fertile Jordan valley for himself when he and Abraham split up to avoid conflict between their herdsmen. When God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, angels physically dragged Lot and his family out of the city, and Lot's wife was turned into a pillar of salt for looking back against their explicit instructions. Lot's two daughters, believing no other men were left alive, later got their father drunk and conceived children by him, and those sons became the ancestors of the Moabites and Ammonites.
