Maachah was a small Aramean kingdom near Geshur, east of the Sea of Galilee in the region later called Batanea, mentioned among the peoples Israel failed to fully dispossess in Joshua's day. The same Hebrew name was borne by several people connected to the royal court: Maacah daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur, became one of David's wives and the mother of Absalom, while another Maacah, also called Michaiah, a granddaughter of Absalom, married Rehoboam and later served as queen mother until her grandson Asa removed her for promoting idol worship. A third Maacah fathered Achish, king of Gath, in Saul's day.
