Maon was a hill town in the Judean hill country about seven miles south of Hebron that gave its name to the surrounding wilderness where David hid from Saul (1 Samuel 23:24-25) and where the wealthy Nabal, later married to Abigail, kept his flocks (1 Samuel 25:2). Ruins and cisterns at the site, now called Tell Ma'in, still mark its location.
