Marcus, more commonly known as John Mark, was a companion of Paul and Barnabas on part of their first missionary journey before leaving partway through, a departure that later caused a sharp disagreement between Paul and Barnabas. He was also a close associate of Peter, who calls him his son, and early church tradition credits him with writing the Gospel of Mark based substantially on Peter's own preaching and memories.
