Mareshah
Rehoboam fortified this Shephelah city, and Asa beat Zerah the Cushite's far larger army there. Micah mourns it among Judah's towns. Its ruins at Tell Sandahanna hold a Hellenistic underground city and painted Sidonian tombs full of exotic animals.

Mareshah was a city in the Shephelah of Judah, fortified by Rehoboam and the site where King Asa defeated a vastly larger invading army under Zerah the Cushite. Micah laments over the city in his oracle of judgment on Judah's towns. Excavations at the site, known today as Tell Sandahanna, have uncovered an extensive Hellenistic-era underground city and the painted Sidonian burial caves, whose walls depict exotic animals in a style showing strong Egyptian and Phoenician influence.
