Massah
"Testing." Near Rephidim the Israelites ran out of water, quarrelled with Moses and demanded a drink, testing God even as he tested them. The place was also called Meribah, and what happened there became shorthand for a hard heart, used as a warning in Psalm 95 and again in Hebrews 3.

Massah, meaning "testing," was the name given to the site near Rephidim where the Israelites, thirsty in the wilderness, quarreled with Moses and demanded water, provoking God's testing of their faith even as they tested him (Exodus 17:1-7). The same site was also called Meribah, "quarreling," and Israel's rebellion there became a byword for hardened unbelief, invoked later in Psalm 95 and Hebrews 3 as a warning against a hardened heart.
