Who this is

Merodach is not a person but Marduk, the chief god of Babylon, invoked in Jeremiah's oracle announcing Babylon's fall: "Merodach is broken in pieces" (Jeremiah 50:2). Marduk's supremacy in Babylonian religion is confirmed by extensive cuneiform sources, including the creation epic Enuma Elish and the Cyrus Cylinder, which credits the god with handing Babylon to Cyrus the Persian, the very event this oracle anticipates.
