Merom was not a person but the waters, likely the marshy lake north of the Sea of Galilee now called Lake Huleh, where Joshua won his climactic victory over the northern Canaanite coalition led by Jabin, king of Hazor (Joshua 11:5-7). Hazor's massive Late Bronze Age destruction layer, one of the best documented in Canaanite archaeology, corresponds to this period, even though the mound itself lies a few miles from the waters.
