Migdal-eder, tower of the flock, was a place near Bethlehem where Jacob pitched his tent after Rachel's death and burial on the road there (Genesis 35:19-21). Micah later uses the same name figuratively for Jerusalem's stronghold, promising that dominion and former glory would return to the daughter of Zion (Micah 4:8). Later Jewish tradition associated the watchtower with a site where shepherds guarded flocks destined for temple sacrifice, though the Bible itself gives no more than the name and its two occurrences.
