First, in plain English

Moses and Aaron's older sister, and a prophetess. She watched over the baby Moses in the reeds of the Nile, and after the crossing of the sea she led Israel's women in song.

Who this is

Scripture names two women Miriam. The one nearly everyone means is Moses and Aaron's older sister, a prophetess herself, who watched over the infant Moses in the Nile reeds and later led Israel's women in song after the crossing of the sea. A second, much more obscure Miriam turns up once in a genealogy of Judah, a daughter of Mered and Bithiah with no story attached to her at all.
