Neapolis, "new city," was the port of Philippi on the coast of Macedonia and the first place in Europe where Paul, Silas, Timothy, and Luke set foot, arriving by ship from Troas at the start of Paul's second missionary journey (Acts 16:11). From there the party took the Via Egnatia, the great Roman highway linking the Adriatic to the Aegean, about ten miles inland to Philippi. Neapolis survives today as Kavala, Greece, whose harbor and hillside old town still overlook the same strait Paul's ship would have crossed.
