Nergal was a Mesopotamian god of war, plague, and the underworld, worshipped at the city of Cuthah; when Assyria deported Cuthites to resettle Samaria after 722 BC, they brought his cult with them into the mixed religion the transplanted population practiced there (2 Kings 17:24, 30). Mesopotamian temple records confirm his cult center at Cuthah, modern Tell Ibrahim, naming him alongside his consort Ereshkigal.
