Nicolaus was one of the seven men chosen by the Jerusalem church to oversee the daily distribution of food to widows, described as a proselyte of Antioch, meaning a Gentile convert to Judaism before becoming a Christian (Acts 6:5). Later Christian writers linked his name to the Nicolaitans condemned in Revelation 2, though the New Testament itself does not connect him to that group.
