On was a major Egyptian city on the east bank of the Nile near modern Cairo, the center of Egyptian sun worship and known to the Greeks as Heliopolis. Joseph married Asenath, daughter of Potipherah, priest of On (Genesis 41:45, 50; 46:20), tying Egypt's highest religious office to Joseph's own household. A granite obelisk raised by the pharaoh Senusret I still stands at the site today, the oldest standing obelisk in Egypt and one of the few visible remains of the ancient temple complex.
