Patara was a major port city on the Lycian coast of southwestern Asia Minor where Paul changed ships on his way back from his third missionary journey, boarding a larger vessel bound across the open sea for Phoenicia (Acts 21:1). Excavations at the site have uncovered an extensive Roman city, including a lighthouse built under Nero in the first century AD, among the oldest lighthouses known from the ancient world.
