John was on Patmos, a small rocky island in the Aegean off Asia Minor, when he saw the visions in Revelation.
A small, rocky island in the Aegean Sea, part of the Sporades group off the coast of Asia Minor, where the apostle John was in exile when he received the visions recorded in the book of Revelation (Revelation 1:9). Roman authorities used islands like Patmos as places of banishment, and John says he was there "for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ." The island still bears the name Patmos today, and a cave traditionally associated with John's vision remains a pilgrimage site.
