Peniel
Jacob wrestled here through the night by the Jabbok River. He came away with a new name, Israel, and a limp he kept. He called the place Peniel, face of God, because he had seen God face to face and lived.

Peniel, also spelled Penuel, was the place near the Jabbok River where Jacob wrestled through the night with a mysterious figure identified as God, emerging with a new name, Israel, and a permanent limp. Jacob named the place "face of God" because, he said, he had seen God face to face and survived. The town there was later destroyed by Gideon for refusing to aid his pursuit of Midian, and Jeroboam I fortified it after Israel's kingdom split.
