Who this is

Peor was a mountain peak in Moab from which Balak brought Balaam for one last attempt to curse Israel, only to hear him pronounce a blessing instead, including the famous prophecy of a star and a scepter rising out of Israel (Numbers 23:28; 24:2-17). The name is also attached to a local Moabite and Midianite deity worshiped there, known as Baal-peor, whose fertility rites drew Israelite men into idolatry and immorality at Shittim, provoking a plague that killed twenty-four thousand people (Numbers 25:1-9).
