One of the store-cities the Israelites were forced to build for Pharaoh in Egypt before the exodus (Exodus 1:11), its name deriving from the Egyptian "Per-Atum," house of the sun-god Atum. Excavations by Édouard Naville in 1883 at Tell el-Maskhuta in the Wadi Tumilat uncovered large storage-chamber remains and brickwork consistent with the biblical account, though some Egyptologists now argue the site lay instead a little further west, at Tell er-Retabeh; either way, the identification rests on real excavated store-city ruins in the eastern Nile Delta.
