Roman province along the southern coast of the Black Sea in northern Asia Minor. Jews from Pontus were present in Jerusalem at Pentecost (Acts 2:9), and Peter addressed part of his first letter to believers scattered across the province (1 Pet. 1:1); Paul's coworker Aquila was a native of Pontus (Acts 18:2). The region had earlier been the heartland of King Mithridates VI, whose decades-long wars against Rome in the first century BC are extensively documented in Greek and Roman historical sources.
