Reuben was Jacob's firstborn son, and Genesis records that he lost his birthright and his father's blessing after sleeping with one of Jacob's concubines, a betrayal Jacob never forgave even on his deathbed. Reuben did try, unsuccessfully, to save Joseph's life when his other brothers wanted to kill him, secretly planning to rescue Joseph later, and his tribe eventually settled east of the Jordan River rather than in the heart of Canaan.
