First, in plain English

He had been an officer of Hadadezer, king of Zobah. After David beat his master, Rezon son of Eliadah ran off, gathered a band of raiders, took Damascus and made himself king. He was a thorn to Solomon for as long as Solomon reigned.

Who this is

Rezon son of Eliadah was a former officer of Hadadezer, king of Zobah, who fled after David's victory over his master and gathered a band of raiders that eventually seized Damascus and made him king of Syria (1 Kings 11:23-25). He became a persistent adversary to Solomon throughout his reign, one of several troubles God raised up against Solomon for his unfaithfulness, and his kingdom in Damascus remained a rival power to Israel for generations afterward.
